Senegal nuclear power programme focused on small modular reactors (launched September 2026)

At a national workshop opened on 7 September 2026, Senegal's energy minister declared that the political decision for nuclear power had been taken and that implementation would follow the IAEA's phased approach under the Sénégal 2050 agenda, with small modular reactors as the chosen route. A ministry presentation said three 300 MW SMRs could cover about 20% of national needs in 2050, no design, vendor, site or financing has been decided.
