Methodology, coverage & attribution
Coverage limits
First release covers a curated cohort of well-evidenced SMR and labeled microreactor deployment projects across several countries. It is NOT a complete global inventory of every announced SMR concept, vendor brochure, or large-reactor site.
This release prioritizes deployment projects with regulator, company, or IAEA-linked evidence, plus a companies directory for linked organizations and selected source-backed reactor developers without tracked deployments yet. Vendor concept sheets without a site/project pathway may appear as company/design records only. Entire national large-reactor fleets are intentionally excluded. Fuel-cycle and equipment suppliers are a separate coverage lane from reactor developers.
Company inclusion
- Include organizations that develop, vend, operate, host, or offtake tracked SMR/microreactor deployments in this dataset.
- Also include source-backed direct reactor developers even when no deployment project is tracked yet — say “no projects tracked here,” never “no projects exist.”
- Keep listing status, ownership/control, and organization type as separate fields. State-controlled entities can also be listed; parent tickers are never assigned to subsidiaries by inference.
- Investor, customer, operator, and reactor-developer roles are distinct.
- Do not invent deployments or plot headquarters as reactor sites.
SMR inclusion
SMRMap includes deployment projects for designs that are factory-fabricatable or modularly deployable and generally at or below about 300 MWe per module (some multi-module plants exceed that site total), OR that a competent regulator or IAEA ARIS entry classifies as an SMR/microreactor. Low electrical output alone is not sufficient. Microreactors are labeled separately. Rolls-Royce SMR (~470 MWe) is included with an explicit capacity-check note.

Preserved distinctions
- MWe vs MWth; gross vs net vs unspecified nameplate
- Module vs multi-module plant totals
- Design approval vs site preparation vs construction vs operation
- Planned vs achieved dates; publication/verification (
last_checked) vs event dates - Exact vs approximate vs undisclosed locations — HQ is never plotted as a deployment
- Map marker styling distinguishes reactor class and approximate location — not stage

Map library & tiles
Interactive maps use Leaflet (BSD-2-Clause) and
OpenStreetMap raster tiles at https://tile.openstreetmap.org/{z}/{x}/{y}.png.
OSMFtile usage policy requires visible attribution, valid Referer, and caching per HTTP headers. Suitable for modest first-release traffic; migrate to self-hosted or a commercial tile host if traffic grows.
Update process
1) Edit canonical JSON under data/. 2) python3 -B scripts/validate.py. 3) python3 -B -m unittest discover -s tests -p 'test_*.py'. 4) python3 -B scripts/build_site.py --out dist/preview. 5) Browser-check filters/map. 6) Only authorized --release builds may replace dist/site.
