South Africa IRP 2025 new-nuclear plan and Necsa SMR partner selection
South Africa's Integrated Resource Plan 2025, approved in October 2025, calls for 5,200 MWe of new nuclear capacity by 2039. In line with Decision 4 of IRP 2025, Necsa launched an expression of interest on 31 March 2026 to find partners to develop, demonstrate and deploy SMRs, and in June 2026 said it hoped to select a development partner within a year. No SMR technology, partner or site has been selected, the earlier 2,500 MWe procurement was paused in 2024.
