Illinois: SMR policy and licensing
Selected federal measures and selected state measures whose official text was opened. This is not a complete list of laws, rules or programmes for any jurisdiction. A state without a page here is not a finding that it has no policy, and these pages do not rate or prefer any state. Nothing here implies that a project is eligible for, or approved under, any measure.
Federal measures apply in Illinois as everywhere in the United States and are listed once on the federal page. They are not counted here.
Laws, rules and executive directives
- Illinois Executive Order 2026-01: nuclear notice of inquiry · In effect
Illinois Executive Order 2026-01 (18 February 2026) · Governor of Illinois · affects: State programme administration
On 18 February 2026 the governor asked the Power Agency and the Commerce Commission to open a notice of inquiry to developers of new nuclear plants within 60 days. The order gathers information. It does not permit a reactor, and the statutes it mentions were not opened.
Not approved or pending: The 60-day period is not converted to a date. The notice of inquiry, if issued, was not opened. The order's recital that another law lifted a nuclear restriction is not treated as the text of that law; the General Assembly site could not be opened. The order does not permit the Valmeyer proposal or any other plant.
