Louisiana: SMR policy and licensing
Selected federal measures and selected state measures whose official text was opened. This is not a complete list of laws, rules or programmes for any jurisdiction. A state without a page here is not a finding that it has no policy, and these pages do not rate or prefer any state. Nothing here implies that a project is eligible for, or approved under, any measure.
Federal measures apply in Louisiana as everywhere in the United States and are listed once on the federal page. They are not counted here.
Laws, rules and executive directives
- Louisiana Act 111 of 2025: small modular reactor environmental permitting · In effect
La. R.S. 30:2014.5, as amended by 2025 La. Acts No. 111 · Louisiana Legislature · affects: Environmental review
Louisiana's enrolled Act 111 of 2025 amends the environmental expedited-permitting statute so a qualifying small modular reactor application can use a federal permitting-parity programme. The applicant must state that purpose and point to a federal letter of collaboration on file. The act does not itself issue the permit, and the enrolled PDF does not print an approval date.
Not approved or pending: The APPROVED line is blank, so no signature day or effective day is stored. The act authorizes a state environmental-permitting programme. It does not issue an environmental permit or a Nuclear Regulatory Commission licence. No project is linked. - Louisiana Act 462 of 2025: green energy includes nuclear reactors · In effect
La. R.S. 30:1501 and 1502, enacted by 2025 La. Acts No. 462 · Louisiana Legislature · affects: State programme administration
Louisiana's enrolled Act 462 of 2025 says energy generated by nuclear reactors is green energy for state programmes that fund green energy or clean energy. The domestic-fuel priority and the cost-comparison rule do not apply to nuclear generation. The enrolled signature line does not print an approval day, and the act does not appropriate money.
Not approved or pending: The APPROVED line does not print a day, and the opened act prints no effective date. It is not an appropriation and not a commission order. No project is linked. The definition does not approve a reactor. - Louisiana Executive Order JML 25-074: environmental permitting review · In effect

On 24 June 2025 the governor ordered the environmental-quality department to prepare its permitting procedures for possible nuclear expansion and to report by the end of 2025. The order stays in effect until the governor changes it or it ends by law. It does not approve a reactor.
