U-Battery first-of-a-kind siting bid at Chalk River (2019-2023)
Historical proposal. In July 2019 the Urenco-led U-Battery consortium completed the first stage of Canadian Nuclear Laboratories' invitation to site a first-of-a-kind SMR at AECL's Chalk River campus and moved to the due-diligence stage, the last site-specific step on record. No site award, land arrangement or construction approval is established. In March 2023 Urenco ended its support for U-Battery after failing to secure new investors; a formal end of the Chalk River proposal is not separately recorded.
